Dear CVC Friend, Faculty, Student:
As the new Academic Dean at City Vision college, it is my hope, desire and prayer that we will continue to provide quality, low-cost, urban ministry education available beyond those studying in the classroom and to resource the urban church with cutting edge practice and theory. The reason for this is simply because you matter! You matter because you are on the front lines of ministry, working with what many deem as "disposable people" trying to impact that one life! You matter because the kingdom needs people like you to continue to be the voice shouting in the wilderness preparing the way and showing the way of the Lord to those who due to systemic injustices continue to struggle day in and day out. You matter because you are the light in this dark world and we need you to survive!
We realize there are individuals who did not have the benefit of theological education and who are now eager to gain a more solid foundation for their ministry in Bible, theology, and ministry skills and we realize that economics come into play when thinking about your education. We exist to help you and your ministry continue to provide excellence in service, expand your knowledge and skills and expose injustices in your communities.
With this first issue of the City Vision Voice and every issue hereafter, you will be given that informational quick news flash to let you know what is happening in our world at CVC, how you can benefit from what we offer via courses, get to know our faculty and students who are making a difference outside the classroom and much more! All to help you decide how far and how deep you should get involved with our school.
Please do send me feedback, I would love to hear from the many voices out there on how City Vision College can make a difference in your educational journey!
Sincerely,

Rev. Elizabeth Rios, MA, Ed.D.
Academic Dean

We are blessed at City Vision College to have some great faculty members who are current practitioners in the world of urban ministry. We'd like to introduce you to someone we think is extraordinary for the work she is doing. Mellisa Patton is the first faculty member we'd like to spotlight!
Melissa teaches our Counseling in the City class which is being offered this summer! She is exactly the type of faculty member that makes learning at City Vision College so rich. She is not only well prepared educationally but she also practices what she has learned in her various roles. A mom to 2 1/2 year old Micah, Melissa is also the founder of Purpose Community Development Foundation. She founded this organization at the height of the economic downturn after seeing how financial crisis leads to poor decision making amongst her church population. That's right, she is also the wife of a church planter, Pastor Stanley Patton. A church started six years ago where she not only helped in all things administratively but used her background to counsel the women of the church.
Melissa has a passion for helping people understand their true purpose and potential in life. She has worked with youth in some capacity her entire life alongside her husband.
Join us at CVC this summer and learn how to make a difference with Professor Melissa!

We want to acknowledge the hard work of our adult students since we know that many of them juggle work, family and school on a daily basis. In every City Vision Voice Newsletter you will read about our Dean's Lister! We are very proud to announce this semester's Dean Lister's for Spring 2 Term:
Julie Bigham | Overall GPA: 3.65
Robert Coggins | Overal GPA: 3.78
Brian Mooney | Overall GPA: 3.94
Being on the Dean's List is not just about getting a shout out in the school's newsletter (although that's nice). It is about showcasing to the world that you take your education seriously, that you believe in your call so much your grades show it! Dean Lister's are evaluated based on their "culmulative" grade point average and can only be evaluated after they have taken six credit hours with us.
Maybe you have had a rough time thus far, here's the way to be a Dean's Lister sooner than you ever thought.
a. Communicate with your professor as soon as "life happens" to work out ways to get your work in on time.
b. Keep up with your weekly reading and homework assignments, once you fall behind its hard to get back on track.
c. Don't take more courses than your life can handle. You have nothing to prove to anyone and you are the only one that knows what you have on your plate, access and determine how much of a course load you can handle at that time.
d. Begin the process to eliminate excuses. We undestand that things happen but sometimes lack of planning ends up causing low grades, missed assignments and emotional overload that you could have prevented. Don't start with the mindset that you can always give an excuse. We do offer grace but we also want you to feel proud of the work you are accomplishng here.
