Course 401 - Counseling in the City (3 credits)
This course examines the role and theory of lay counseling as it applies to urban ministry settings. The coursework guides the learner into increased awareness, knowledge, and skill in interacting with multicultural and diverse populations. Counselor attributes, cultural sensitivity, and the concept of contextualized counseling will be explored. This course also focuses on client assessment, and approaches to addressing problems common to distressed urban dwellers seeking counseling.

Learning Objectives for this Course
Week One
Overview of Course, Relationships and Urban Stress
- To acquaint the student with fellow classmates, instructor, course syllabus, City Vision College guidelines, and requirements of this course
- To understand the limitations and constrictions both of the counseling role and of this particular course on the overall field of counseling
- To identify the personality type of each student and encourage self exploration in the area of trust
- To examine major sources of urban stress and their impact on counselees
- To provide a fundamental overview of the counseling process
Week Two
Principles and Challenges of Lay Counseling
- To identify the challenges of lay counseling in urban ministries
- To introduce the student to the basic principles of Christian counseling
- To expose the student to the inner workings of an urban counseling center
Week Three
The Role of Culture in Counseling
- To explore how culture affects a person's view of the world and impacts the counseling process
- To assess the cultural sensitivity of the student
- To examine the subjects of racism and spiritual warfare in relation to psychological and spiritual functioning
- To explore basic yet effective counseling techniques
Week Four
The Challenges of Cross-cultural Counseling
- To further examine the impact of race and racial attitudes on counseling
- To introduce the student to the unique challenges of cross-cultural counseling
Week Five
Dealing with Special Counseling Needs
- To examine the essential characteristics of non-chemical addictive behaviors
- To explore the issues faced by ACOA's and codependency
- To present information regarding the AIDS as well as common characteristics of PWA (People With Aids)
Week Six
Dealing with Relational Issues
- To explore and present counseling strategies for the areas of marital conflict, domestic abuse and divorce
- To examine the concept of boundaries and appropriate emotional and physical distance with counselees
Week Seven
Special Topics in Counseling People with Various Needs
- Counseling the sexually abused
- To explore and present counseling strategies for the areas of single parenting, crisis pregnancy, and sexual abuse.
- To explore further the issue of counselor boundaries.
- To discuss issues of privacy, disclosure, and rights of clients.
Week Eight
Examining Further Counseling Situations
- To explore and present counseling strategies for the areas of victimization, stress, and other psychological disorders
Week Nine
Developing Profesional Counseling Skills
- To provide the student with tools to grow professionally and spiritually
- To provide the student with an opportunity to put learned assessment skills into practice through the completion of counseling project.
- To give the student an opportunity to provide feedback on the current course.
- To provide an opportunity to demonstrate skills and knowlwge acquired through the course by taking a comprehensive final examination.
