There are two reasons to investigate low cost computers:

  1. to reduce your computing costs
  2. to enable the poor to have access to ICT

Accessible Technology

  • One Laptop per Child Project - the "$100 laptop"
  • Inveneo,a nonprofit that "focuses on designing, integrating and supporting affordable technology systems that match the needs of people and organizations in under-served areas of the world." They have some lower cost solutions.
  • AMD's 50x15 initiative - aims to provide ICT access to 50% of the world by 2015.

Used Computers

There are a number of organisations which refurbish used computers and pass them on to charities, hospitals, orphanages, schools, and other non-profit groups. You can find a number of them listed in the Computer Re-use Optimisation Project. gjs
