MIN603: Foundations of Christian Theology

Course Description

There are many denominations, divisions and theological disputes in the modern church. But despite these types of disunity, there is a common core of belief that all faithful Christians have affirmed throughout history. And for almost two millennia, this core of belief has been summarized in the Apostles’ Creed. This series explains the history and use of the Apostles’ Creed, as well as the details and significance of each of its articles of faith. This course will also explore foundational concepts and tools the Wesleyan Quadrilateral for analyzing and evaluating theological concepts.

Course Outcomes

After completing this course, you will be able to:

  1. Summarize elements of the Apostles’ Creed, its historical context, and its significance within the Christian faith. 
  2. Analyze each article of the Apostles’ Creed, examining the core doctrines it presents. This  exploration will include discussions on the nature of God, the divinity of Jesus Christ, the role of the Holy Spirit, and the resurrection of the dead.
  3. Describe the biblical basis for the beliefs outlined in the Apostles’ Creed
  4. Evaluate theological texts, analyze doctrinal statements, and critically evaluate theological arguments.
  5. Evaluate theological concepts using the Wesleyan Quadrilateral and other theological concepts and tools.
